Welcome to the PAdES FAQ web site. This site includes answers to questions already asked about PAdES and lets you ask new questions which we will attempt to answer as soon as possible.

PAdES (acronym of PDF Advanced Electronic Signatures) is a set of standards published by ETSI (TS 102 778 parts 1 to 5) to support European requirements for electronic signatures. PAdES is based on existing PDF Signatures as specified in ISO 32 000. It includes features to support validation of signatures which are stored for years or even decades.

The site is aimed at implementers of PAdES as well as those considering whether PAdES is appropriate to their needs.

Why PAdES?

ID #1012

010. Why do I just not use PDF Signatures as already defined in ISO 32000-1 and implemented in a range of PDF Products

PAdES is compatible with existing ISO 32000-1 PDF but selects options and adds attributes which ensures that the signature fits in the EU legal framework requirements as specified in of Directive 1999/93, in particular that the signature is:

  • Uniquely linked to signatory.
  • Capable of identifying the signatory.
  • Created in a way that the signatory has sole control.
  • Linked to data to which it relates in a manner that any subsequent change of data is detectable.

In addition, PAdES supports validation of electronic signatures stored over the long term.
